Two fighters exit the UFC roster after the Mexico City event
Guilherme Cruz, a Brazilian journalist who has covered combat sports since 2008, reports that Felipe Bunes and Jose Daniel Medina were removed from the UFC roster following their recent defeats on the February 28 Mexico City card.
Bunes (14-9) ended his UFC tenure with a narrow split decision loss to Mexican flyweight Edgar Chairez, finishing with a promotional record of 1-3. He joined the UFC in 2024 after capturing the LFA flyweight title and initially fell to Joshua Van in his debut, who would later become a champion. Bunes then scored a first-round armbar victory over Jose Johnson before dropping back-to-back decisions to Rafael Estevam (who missed weight by four pounds) and Chairez.
Medina (11-7) faced a tougher run, departing the UFC after losing all four of his promotional bouts. He was knocked out by Ryan Gandra in 41 seconds in Mexico, and had previously been finished by Dusko Todorovic and Ateba Gautier, with another decision loss to Zach Reese rounding out the skid.
Medina also entered the UFC via a loss, earning a contract from UFC CEO Dana White based on his performance in defeat to Magomed Gadzhiyasulov on the Contender Series in October 2023. A former regional champion in South America, Medina leaves with a five-fight losing streak and free agency ahead.
