The group's talent caught the attention of Ray Charles, who they opened for in 1963. However, the Hi-Fi's disbanded the following year, setting the stage for McLemore's next chapter.
In 1965, McLemore, McCoo, and two childhood friends from St. Louis, Billy Davis Jr. and Ronald Towson, along with schoolteacher Florence LaRue, formed the Versatiles. They signed with singer Johnny Rivers' Soul City Records, marking a pivotal moment in their careers. Rivers suggested a name change, and thus, the 5th Dimension was born, reflecting their embrace of psychedelia and hippy culture.
The group's breakthrough came in 1967 with the Mamas & the Papas' song 'Go Where You Wanna Go.' However, it was their own composition, 'Up, Up and Away,' written by Jimmy Webb, that catapulted them to success. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and later earned four Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Best Contemporary Single.
