Remembering LaMonte McLemore: 5th Dimension Singer's Life and Legacy (2026)

The music world mourns the loss of LaMonte McLemore, a legendary singer and photographer who passed away at the age of 90. McLemore was a founding member of the iconic vocal group, the 5th Dimension, whose harmonious blend of pop, soul, and psychedelia captivated audiences in the 1960s and 70s. With a career spanning decades, McLemore's impact on music and his contributions to the entertainment industry are undeniable.

Born in St. Louis, McLemore's journey began in the US Navy, where he honed his skills as an aerial photographer. His passion for music led him to join a jazz ensemble, the Hi-Fi's, alongside future 5th Dimension bandmate Marilyn McCoo. The group's talent caught the attention of Ray Charles, who they opened for in 1963. However, the Hi-Fi's disbanded the following year, setting the stage for McLemore's next chapter.

In 1965, McLemore, McCoo, and two childhood friends from St. Louis, Billy Davis Jr. and Ronald Towson, along with schoolteacher Florence LaRue, formed the Versatiles. They signed with singer Johnny Rivers' Soul City Records, marking a pivotal moment in their careers. Rivers suggested a name change, and thus, the 5th Dimension was born, reflecting their embrace of psychedelia and hippy culture.

The group's breakthrough came in 1967 with the Mamas & the Papas' song 'Go Where You Wanna Go.' However, it was their own composition, 'Up, Up and Away,' written by Jimmy Webb, that catapulted them to success. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and later earned four Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Best Contemporary Single.

McLemore's talent extended beyond music. He had a parallel career as a sports and celebrity photographer, with his pictures appearing in renowned magazines like Jet. His warm bass voice and camera skills made him a versatile artist, leaving a lasting impact on both the music and photography industries.

LaMonte McLemore is survived by his beloved wife, Mieko McLemore, their children Ciara and Darin, his sister Joan, and three grandchildren. His legacy continues to inspire and influence new generations of artists, ensuring his memory lives on through his music and photography.
