The Boston Red Sox are on the verge of making a significant move by potentially acquiring an infielder who has just completed his first All-Star season.
In recent developments, the Red Sox have seen one of their targets slip away as Eugenio Suárez has reportedly decided to join the Cincinnati Reds. This loss is compounded by the fact that the team already lost another crucial player, Alex Bregman, who signed with the Chicago Cubs. Without any replacements lined up, the Red Sox may find themselves in a challenging position, especially since their current roster might not be sufficient to maintain their competitive edge.
Trade rumors are swirling around two key players: Isaac Paredes and Brendan Donovan. Both athletes had standout performances last season, earning All-Star titles, and could significantly enhance the Red Sox's offensive capabilities. CBS Sports’ Matt Snyder has suggested that a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals for Donovan is a strong possibility.
Snyder points out, "It’s the perfect time for the Cardinals to get the best offer from teams that still need to beef up their position-player side of the roster." He acknowledges that while the Seattle Mariners would also be a fitting destination for Donovan, he leans toward the idea of the Red Sox acquiring him to fill the everyday second baseman role in Boston.
The Red Sox have previously engaged in successful trades with their former executive Chaim Bloom, and this offseason, they’ve already completed deals involving Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras from the Cardinals.
Donovan has primarily played second base during his major league career and earned a utility Gold Glove award as a rookie in 2022. Despite not having his best defensive year overall, he proved to be reliable at second base, achieving a plus-two outs above average in that position, although he finished the year with a minus-one overall. Offensively, he showcased his skills with a .775 OPS, hitting 10 home runs, driving in 50 RBIs, and recording 42 extra-base hits.
While the Cardinals are reportedly not keen on trading Donovan at a bargain price, a compelling offer from the Red Sox could change their stance. Given that the Cardinals are currently retooling their lineup, trading Donovan for a couple of promising prospects or young talents may be a strategic move for them.
What do you think about the potential trade? Do you believe Donovan would be a valuable addition to the Red Sox, or should they explore other options? Let's hear your thoughts!
