The All Blacks are facing a harsh reality check, according to former Blues boss Pat Lam, who believes New Zealand Rugby (NZR) needs to acknowledge their current position. For years, the All Blacks have dominated the rugby world, but recent results tell a different story. Under both Scott Robertson and his predecessor, Ian Foster, the team has experienced some disappointing outcomes since 2019. But here's where it gets controversial: Lam questions whether NZR has shown enough accountability for these setbacks.
Lam, now the director of rugby for Bristol Bears, emphasizes that NZR must recognize they are currently playing catch-up and adapt accordingly to regain their top spot. He points out that South Africa is currently the best team globally.
"New Zealand's biggest advantage now is they’re not the best in the world, they all understand they’re not the best in the world," Lam stated. He suggests that other teams have improved by innovating and striving to surpass the All Blacks, who were once the benchmark.
Lam believes that NZR's approach needs to reflect their current status, urging them to make decisions that reflect a commitment to becoming the best again. He recalls a time when All Blacks players were unfamiliar with emerging talents from other teams, highlighting a potential narrow-mindedness.
"In New Zealand, we’re in our world and we’re like, ‘this is the best, we expect the best, why aren’t we winning?’" Lam notes. He stresses that while public expectations are high, NZR must recognize their current position and make decisions accordingly.
This perspective raises a crucial question: Is NZR truly adapting to the changing landscape of international rugby? Are they learning from the innovative strategies of teams like South Africa, whose coach, Rassie Erasmus, is considered one of the game's best thinkers? What do you think? Do you agree with Lam's assessment, or do you believe the All Blacks are still on the right track? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
