Big news for Nebraska football fans! The Cornhuskers are shaking things up on the defensive side of the ball, and it involves a significant hire. On3's Pete Nakos reports that Nebraska has chosen Rob Aurich, formerly of San Diego State, to be their new defensive coordinator.
Aurich's arrival at San Diego State marked a dramatic transformation. In just two seasons, he orchestrated a stunning turnaround for the Aztecs' defense.
But here's where it gets really impressive: In the 2025 season, under Aurich's guidance, San Diego State's defense was a force to be reckoned with, ranking fifth nationally in scoring defense, allowing a mere 12.6 points per game. This is a massive improvement compared to the 26.8 points per game they conceded in 2023, the year before Aurich joined the team, which placed them 71st nationally.
Aurich's impact was undeniable. He took the unit from giving up 29.6 points per game, ranking 97th nationally in 2024, to a top-tier defense in 2025. This shows a clear upward trajectory under his leadership.
Before his success at San Diego State, Aurich held defensive coordinator and linebacker coach positions at Idaho during 2022-23. He also has experience at South Dakota and Bemidji State. His career path shows a consistent dedication to defensive coaching, making him a promising choice for Nebraska.
The defensive coordinator position at Nebraska became available when John Butler was let go on December 1st. While the team's total defense under Butler ranked 21st nationally, allowing 312.3 yards per game, and the scoring defense ranked 53rd, giving up 23.0 points per game, the team clearly sought a change.
Nebraska's coach, Matt Rhule, expressed gratitude to John Butler while announcing Phil Snow as the interim defensive coordinator for the upcoming bowl game. Rhule also mentioned the team's plans to name a new defensive coordinator for the 2026 season in the coming weeks.
