Navigating the Storm: Can El-Rufai Truly Clear His Name Amidst a Torrent of Allegations?
It seems the political arena is buzzing with a rather public and, frankly, quite concerning spat! Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, who previously served as a Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, has weighed in on the escalating dispute between former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai and the current National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. Baba-Ahmed's take? He believes El-Rufai needs to prioritize clearing his name from corruption allegations, and, rather pointedly, described the former governor as “a very difficult person to advise.”
Speaking on Channels Television's Political Paradigm program, Baba-Ahmed didn't mince words. He suggested that if he were to offer advice to El-Rufai, it would be to limit the damage and focus intensely on addressing the accusations of financial impropriety leveled against him. He elaborated that, by his very nature, "Mallam El-Rufai by character is a very difficult person to advise…"
But here's where it gets controversial: Baba-Ahmed strongly argued that these swirling allegations and counter-allegations shouldn't be dismissed as mere political theater. Instead, he insisted they must be rigorously tested in the courts. He stated, “I’d say that the simpler way to go about this is put all these allegations on the table. They are legal issues…” This includes everything from the corruption claims against El-Rufai to accusations involving Nuhu Ribadu and even the perplexing matter of “imported, poisoned chemicals.”
“All these weighty issues must be brought at the disposal of the judicial process, and we must know what the truths or otherwise of these allegations are; we cannot sweep them on the grounds that this is politics, it’s not good enough,” he emphasized. This is a call for accountability and transparency, urging that we can't simply sweep serious accusations under the rug.
And this is the part most people miss: The public rift between El-Rufai and Ribadu has intensified significantly. El-Rufai has accused Ribadu of orchestrating his alleged “abduction” at the Abuja airport, claiming his associates overheard instructions to detain him. Furthermore, El-Rufai has alleged that the NSA is attempting to influence ongoing investigations by anti-corruption bodies and the Kaduna State House of Assembly, purportedly due to El-Rufai's alleged 2031 presidential ambitions. A particularly concerning point raised was the reported procurement of thallium sulphate by the Office of the National Security Adviser, with El-Rufai demanding public clarification.
Nuhu Ribadu, on his part, has categorically denied all these accusations, dismissing the presidential ambition claims as baseless and asserting that agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operate with complete independence.
Reflecting on the breakdown of their relationship, Baba-Ahmed expressed profound sadness, noting that it highlights a deeper malaise within Nigeria's political culture. He remarked, “I am extremely saddened by the development. I know both gentlemen and how deep their personal relationship was, and I see one of the poisonous elements of our politics.” He went on to say, “If you can actually poison a relationship with this nature this deeply, then we are in very serious trouble…” The situation is so dire that two individuals who once shared a close bond, even a former close professional and personal relationship dating back to the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, are now reportedly threatening legal action against each other.
So, what do you think? Is it truly impossible to advise someone like El-Rufai, or is this a symptom of a larger problem in how our political figures handle disputes? Should all allegations, no matter how politically charged, be pursued through the judicial system? Share your thoughts in the comments below – we'd love to hear your perspective!
