A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake has struck northern Afghanistan, according to the US Geological Survey. This event comes on the heels of a devastating 6.2-magnitude earthquake in August, which claimed over 2,200 lives in the eastern region. The recent quake has caused widespread concern, especially in the Hindu Kush region, where the ground shook at a depth of 28 kilometers in the town of Kholm, home to nearly 65,000 people. The tremors were felt as far as the capital, Kabul, and an orange alert was issued, indicating a potential for 100-1,000 fatalities, according to the USGS. This is a stark reminder of the country's vulnerability to earthquakes, a recurring natural disaster in the region, particularly along the Hindu Kush mountain range, where tectonic plates meet. The Taliban authorities, who returned to power in 2021, have faced numerous challenges, including major earthquakes in Herat, which resulted in over 1,500 deaths and the destruction of more than 63,000 homes. Afghanistan's ongoing struggles include endemic poverty, severe drought, and the influx of millions of Afghans displaced by neighboring countries. Since 1900, northeastern Afghanistan has experienced 12 earthquakes with a magnitude above 7, as noted by seismologist Brian Baptie.
